Lessons from a celebratory beer

Posted on September 22, 2011 by Mary Ellen Brewington

You may have heard about former Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer who was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama on Sept. 15. You also may have heard that Meyer had a special request before the ceremony: He’d like to sit down and have a beer with the president.

So, President Obama and Sgt. Meyer sat on the patio outside the Oval Office and enjoyed a glass of the White House’s own brew, a White House Honey Ale.

That sounds like the perfect beer to toast in honor of Sgt. Meyer – a unique brew for a special occasion. He is a true hero in every sense of the word, and Cherokee Distributing thanks him for his service, bravery and selflessness.

In our daily lives, we may not be rubbing elbows with the President or being photographed for national news outlets when we sit down to a cold mug of beer. But, we have a lot to celebrate.

On a large scale, 10 years have passed since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that led the U.S. to engage in the war in Afghanistan and probably led Sgt. Meyer to the moment when he choose to risk his life to save 36 others. And, Americans are still free today thanks to service men and women like him.

On a smaller scale, you may be celebrating a birthday, an anniversary or a graduation. You may have a family member returning home from military service. You may have a new baby or new job. You may simply have had a good day, had the kindness of a stranger put a smile on your face or had the opportunity to take time out of this busy, hurried life to spend time with a loved one.

Our advice from Cherokee Distributing? Take a cue from Sgt. Meyer and don’t forget to sit down and savor the moment.

There are plenty of reasons in life to celebrate. Take the time to cherish the moment with friends and family. Throw a party. Send thank you notes. Smile. Toast a cold beverage or split an extra piece of pie.

Cheers to Sgt. Meyer. And, cheers to all the good things in life!
