As of January 1, 2017, the legal definition of beer changed in Tennessee. Beer is defined defined by its alcohol content, which is also known as gravity. For those who don’t know, gravity is the measure of the density of a substance in comparison to the density of water. So what classifies a beer as high gravity? That’s a great question.
What defines at beer as high gravity varies from state to state. There are two ways to measure alcohol percentage. You can measure beer by its alcohol by weight (ABW) or its alcohol by volume (ABV). Before the laws changed in Tennessee, the ceiling for alcohol content in beer was 5% ABW or 6.25% ABV. Now, beer can be defined as having up to 8% ABW or 10.1% ABV. So what does this mean for you? Again, another great question!
